Why we choose to manufacture in Australia
At Kartiana, being Australian Made isn't simply something we put on a label.
It's a conscious decision we made about how we wanted to build our brand, the quality of the garments we wanted to create and the type of Australian business we wanted to be.
Kartiana is an Australian-owned, family business founded by mother-and-daughter team Karen and Tiana Jakab. From the beginning, we wanted to create premium Activewear and Swimwear that women and girls could feel good wearing, not only because of how it looks and feels, but because of how it is made.
That's why our garments are designed and manufactured in Australia.
Why does Australian Made matter to us?
The fashion industry has changed enormously. Fast fashion has made clothing cheaper and more accessible, but it has also changed the way many of us think about the garments we buy. We wanted Kartiana to take a different approach. Rather than focusing on mass production and constantly changing collections, we wanted to concentrate on quality, comfort, performance, sustainability and longevity. We wanted to create garments that people would genuinely enjoy wearing again and again.
Manufacturing in Australia gives us the opportunity to stay much closer to the people involved in making our garments and to support the skills and businesses that are part of Australia's local fashion manufacturing industry.
Every Kartiana garment represents the work of people involved in areas such as patternmaking, sampling, cutting, sewing and garment production. When you purchase an Australian Made Kartiana garment, you're therefore supporting much more than one small Australian business. You're helping support an entire local manufacturing ecosystem right here in Sydney, Australia.
Supporting Australian jobs and Australian businesses
Small Australian brands cannot exist in isolation. Behind every finished Kartiana garment are skilled people and businesses that help turn an idea into something you can actually wear. Australian manufacturing helps support local jobs, skills and businesses while keeping valuable garment-making knowledge here in Australia. For us, that matters.
As a family-owned Australian business, we understand how important it is for small businesses to support one another. Choosing to manufacture locally allows Kartiana to contribute to the Australian economy while supporting the patternmakers, sample machinists, cutters and manufacturers who are an essential part of our industry.
Quality we can stand behind
One of the biggest reasons we choose Australian manufacturing is simple: Quality matters. Kartiana was never created to be disposable fashion.
The brand was approximately six years in development before launch, with garments designed, sampled, redesigned and resampled as we worked towards the quality, fit, comfort and appearance we wanted. We wanted Activewear and Swimwear that would feel beautiful to wear, perform properly and continue looking great after repeated use.
That's also why we use premium sustainable fabrics across the Kartiana range. Our compression garments use recycled performance fabric designed to provide the balance of firmness, stretch, support and comfort that has become an important part of the Kartiana experience.
Our philosophy is simple: Buy better. Wear longer.
Sustainable Activewear starts with making considered choices
Sustainability isn't achieved through one decision. It's the result of many choices made throughout the life of a garment. For Kartiana, one of those choices is using recycled performance fabrics. Another is manufacturing locally.
Another is focusing on quality and longevity rather than creating clothing designed to be quickly replaced. We believe one of the most effective ways we can reduce the impact of fashion is to create garments people actually want to keep wearing.
A pair of leggings that remains in your wardrobe and is worn repeatedly is very different from a cheaply made garment that loses its shape, fades or needs replacing after a short period. That's why Designed to Move. Made to Last. isn't simply a Kartiana tagline. It reflects the way we think about our products.
We're not interested in mass production
Kartiana is a small Australian fashion brand, and we're proud of that. We aren't trying to produce enormous quantities of garments or compete with global fast-fashion companies on price. Our focus is different. We want to create premium Activewear and Swimwear with attention given to the details that make a garment enjoyable to own and wear.
· The fabric.
· The fit.
· The compression.
· The construction.
· The colour.
· The pockets.
· The comfort.
And ultimately, how you feel when you put it on.
Australian manufacturing costs more than mass-producing clothing in many overseas markets, and this is naturally reflected in the price of our garments. But price and value aren't always the same thing. When you buy Kartiana, you're investing in a garment designed to be worn repeatedly rather than treated as disposable fashion.
Activewear designed for real life
We also believe Activewear should work beyond the gym. Our customers wear Kartiana for pilates, yoga, walking, running and training, but they also wear it while travelling, meeting friends, walking the dog, heading to the beach or simply getting through a busy day.
That versatility was intentional. We wanted to create garments that women could put on in the morning and genuinely feel comfortable wearing throughout the day. Supportive without feeling restrictive. Performance-focused without looking overly technical. Comfortable without sacrificing style.
It's one of the reasons we're particularly proud when customers tell us they want another pair after experiencing their first Kartiana garment.
What our customers tell us
Ultimately, we can talk about quality all day, but what matters most is what happens when someone actually wears Kartiana.
Our customer reviews regularly mention the things we set out to achieve when developing the collection: comfort, quality, durability, flattering fits, beautiful colours and the right level of compression.
Customers have also told us that knowing their garments are Australian Made is an important part of their decision to choose Kartiana.
For us, that's incredibly rewarding. It tells us that there are Australian consumers who still care about where their clothes come from, how they're made and the businesses their purchases support.
What does it mean when you buy Australian Made?
When you choose an Australian Made product from a small Australian brand, your purchase has an impact. You're supporting Australian businesses. You're supporting local manufacturing. You're supporting skilled Australian workers. You're helping preserve garment-making skills in Australia. And you're helping brands like Kartiana continue making products locally. Every purchase matters. For a small business, there really is a person behind every order.
A mother-and-daughter Australian business
Kartiana is also deeply personal to us. The brand was created by Karen and Tiana as a mother-and-daughter business, but the story extends another generation.
Karen had an incredibly close relationship with her own mother, who she sadly lost to ovarian cancer. Kartiana was created partly in memory of that relationship and the special connection between mothers and daughters. That history has helped shape what Kartiana represents today.
· Family.
· Quality.
· Longevity.
· Confidence.
And creating something meaningful that can be passed from one generation to another. It's also why we've designed Kartiana for teenagers through to adult women of all ages. We don't believe confidence, comfort or great Activewear should belong to one generation.
Proudly Australian
We know we could have chosen a different manufacturing path. However, producing Kartiana in Australia represents the kind of brand we want to build.
· A brand that values quality over quantity.
· A brand that supports Australian manufacturing.
· A brand that makes more considered choices about sustainability.
· A brand that creates garments women genuinely enjoy owning.
· A brand that we're proud to put our name behind.
So when you see the Australian Made logo on Kartiana, we hope it means something to you too. Because behind that logo is a small Australian family business, local manufacturing, skilled people and a commitment to making Activewear and Swimwear differently.
Designed to Move. Made to Last. Proudly Australian.
